The word is out. The US$340,000,000 Mastaba will be constructed in Abu Dhabi entirely from – are you ready? – 410,000 multicolored, empty oil barrels. Why? Because.
The 150m (492 feet) tall and 225m (738 feet) wide, flat-topped pyramid attraction was designed by Bulgarian-born artist Christo. The colossal sculpture will be taller than St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, and the Great Pyramid in Giza, and the Kaaba in Makkah. The Mastaba will be erected in Al Gharbia, 160m (100 miles) south of the city of Abu Dhabi near some of the tallest sand dunes in the world. It is forecast to be completed in 30 months and involve hundreds of workers. Funding for the ambitious project will be through private investors and sales of Christo’s artwork.
